Occupation:     Rutger became a professional triathlete in January 2003. He is fully employed by BLOSO, the Flemish governmental sports organization. Before becoming a PRO, Rutger worked as a lifeguard in the swimming pool of Kessel-Lo/Leuven.

Rutger is currently 32 years old and lives in Leuven (Belgium) together with his wive Sofie and their two kids, Tille and Phara.  Sofie is a physiotherapist and also a recreational triathlete. Rutger has one brother (Bjorn) and one sister (Maja). As a kid, Rutger has lived in the US for about two years (in Palo Alto, California), during which he went to the local primary school and learned to speak English fluently.
